EU BTSF Regional Workshop on
ANIMAL DISEASE PREPAREDNESS
The European Union, under the direction of the European Commission Directorate General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) organised a regional workshop on Animal Disease Preparedness in Putrajaya from 18 to 21 March 2019. The event was part of the Better Training for Safer Food (BTSF) initiative (http://ec.europa.eu/chafea/food/index.html) managed by the Consumers, Health, Agriculture and Food Executive Agency (CHAFEA).
This workshop is part of a series of regional workshops on Sanitary and Phytosanitary issues held all over the world during 2017-2019. Other subjects of workshops already implemented in Asia included plant products (in Cambodia), safety of aquaculture products (in Vietnam) and another workshop on Animal Disease Preparedness (in Japan).
The training aimed to enhance the capacity of participants on the understanding of EU legislation on animal disease preparedness (including early warning, contingency planning, animal disease control, biosecurityand regionalisation) to protect against the introduction into and spread within the EU of specific animal diseases.
For this workshop around 50 people from both ASEAN and SAARC countries attended the workshop. Most participants were senior national officials from the competent veterinary authorities involved in the fields covered by the workshop. The event featured five EU experts from different EU Member States, covering several aspects on animal disease prevention and control.
The workshop was organised over four days. The programme included sharing of experiences on prevention and control of animal diseases in the twelve participating Asian countries. The workshop provided theoretical and practical training and a mix of presentation/discussion sessions, working groups on case studies (incl. African Swine Fever), simulation exercises and a poster session. The workshop was introduced by a welcome speech delivered by Andrea Dionisi (European Commission-International affairs) coordinator for Asian Countries and entitled for the coordination of the BTSF activitiesin the Asian region. This was followed by a presentation on good practices on Animal Disease Preparedness in the EU by Andrea Gavinelli (European Commission-Head of Unit animal health). Also, a presentation was delivered by Pekka Penttila from the Trade and Economic Section of the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia.
By further building capacity for animal disease preparedness in the region, a more effective cooperation between ASEAN and SAARC countries will ensure enhanced surveillance and improved control programmes that are compliant with the EU legislation and the international standards of OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health).
As a result, the workshop supported the ASEAN and SAARC countries towards the reduction of animal disease outbreaks which will subsequently contribute to the prevention of animal diseases into the EU. Ultimately, the outcomes of this workshop will lead to better and safer food for both European and Asian consumers.
