Description :
Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious transboundary disease that can kill between 30 and 70 percent of infected animals and has severe negative socio-economic impacts on the income of livestock farmers and, in particular, the livelihoods and food security of the most vulnerable rural communities. Discovered in Côte d’Ivoire in 1942, the disease has since spread at an alarming rate, threatening the very existence of over 80 percent of the world’s sheep and goat population in more than 70 countries, mostly throughout Africa, Asia and the Middle East. In 2018 the European Union (EU) has decided to support the OIE and the FAO, in their joint strategy for control and eradication of PPR, with the goal of eradicating the disease by 2030.
Objectives :
By further building capacity for PPR control in Jordan and in other countries in the region, the EU intends ensuring that concerned exporting countries establish effective surveillance and control programmes compliant with the philosophy of EU legislation and OIE standards
The specific objective is to enhance capacity of participants on the surveillance and control of PPR (including biosecurity, vaccination, risk analysis, awareness and emergency preparedness) to protect against the introduction into and spread of PPR within countries free from that disease.
